1597   LAMBERT, Andreae

One of the earliest road books with a set of maps was that produced in Cologne in 1597. Although the compiler of the distance tables is not credited here in the title, it is generally thought to be by Andreae Lambert and Gerhard Kremer, the elder. Lambert is only named in the imprint (L´ambercun Andree), some references are to Andrea Lambert. The Kronn und Auszbundt aller Wegweiser (the title does not lend itself to translation: The crown and centre of signposts) consists of lists of roads from various cities, beginning with 71 German cities and then fewer for each of the other countries included, such as Netherlands, France and Italy but also including England. Small maps were also placed before the countries. These are somewhat similar to those produced by Gerard Mercator or Hondius at about the same time. In that part listing English Roads some eleven are listed, including (i) London to St. Burien.

A book printer in Cologne1590-98, Lambert also called himself Trudopolitanus (probably from Sint Truijen (Truiden) in the Belgian province of Limburg) and had his print shop in the Römergasse, Cologne. He printed for the publisher Johann Bussemacher including Matthias Quad´s Europae totius orbis terrarum descriptio ..." (1594, Excudebat Lambertus Andreas sumptibu Iani Bussemachers, MDXCVI). He also printed two series of engravings by the Cologne engraver Augustin Braun. After his death in 1599, his press was taken over by the Cologne printer and publisher Bernhard Walter.[1]
